Our parents raised us this way in the 70s before green was hip. We always had a garden, home made yogurt and granola and lived 'reuse, reduce, recycle' before it was a slogan. After the excesses of the subsequent decades this book helps bring us back to a more sustainable lifestyle; something that has become critical not optional.Edit your review | Add a comment | Share- No likes Can’t Like Unlike Like No likesIn this book Mark Kurlansky compiles the writings of the New Deals WPA Federal Writer's Project. In the Depression this program employed writers around the country. It chronicles regional foods, recipes and cultures which were already beginning to disappear in the 1930s. Essays by writers such as Zorah Neale Hurston, Nelson Algren and Eudora Welty give us a literary, humorous and poetic look into our past, when almost all food was fresh, local and seasonal. Filled with traditional recipes and cultural gems, this book is an education and inspiration.

Renee Loux's Living Cuisine is one of my favourite green living books, providing thorough instruction around organic food choices and how to use fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds as the main foods in your diet.
